Why does the toughest times as a parent sometimes still seem awesome?

family-campingWe were excited to go on a last minute camping trip last week!  We packed our bags and our newly bought 6 man tent (yep finally moved up to squeezing into a 3 man tent which i had since my 20s!
We went off to the sunny coast, but got caught in a horrible traffic jam due to a crash. It ended up taking 3-1/2 hours instead of the normal run of 2. This isnt that bad unless you have a 3 and 5 year old losing it in the back! I also felt stressed from the aggressive afternoon angry traffic the whole way! Once we had arrived, our eldest Chole started to cough aggressively and had difficulty breathing!? With her past of having asthma, I started to panic! We thought of getting her to a hospital, but after a few minutes trying to get to a hospital she settled and was happy and normal little happy girl again?! .. I guess we could continue with our camping trip.
We found our camping spot and began to pitch our tent as quickly as possible for the first time trying to get it up before the sun went down.
We were exhausted by then and decided to have an early night.
In the morning we had so many things planned to do and decided to meet a close friend for breakfast, our youngest was playing and was complaining about a ‘sore belly’, it was hard to work out what it was exactly since she is 3 yrsold and its hard to gauge just how ‘sore’ something really is. We arrived at our first stop, which was our friends and at the front door as we greeted she pukes up all over the place!?  “Well,,,, Hello, long time no see, by the way, may I borrow your hose to wash the vomit off your porch?” Well, Im thankful she did it outside and not on their couch or something!,,, We sat around and chatted, but felt it was best to cancel all our plans for the trip and take our sick little girl home, (mind you, Chole was more than fine by this time). We made our trip back, but due to a fire most likely set by a cigarette on the highway medium strip, it ended up taking close to 5 hours going 20-30 km hr the whole way in 35-degree heat! My wife’s car air condition gave out half way and it felt like an oven in there!! We had to make several stops so we didn’t over cook ourselves in the oven of a car and was totally exhausted by the time we got home. (Soraya who was sick was 100%  by the time we got home)!
I know this may sound like a terrible trip, with random sicknesses and spending most of our time stuck in angry hot traffic for most of the time, but strange enough my wife and I still had a really good time! Even though Soraya threw up and was sick, she settled and gave us the most loving cuddles after. When Chloe had trouble breathing for a little we were up several times through the night to check on her and it was awesome to cuddle up as a family in our new tent.
Yea, the traffic was horrible and stressful, but we also spent a lot of the time singing along to songs from the stereo, (I bet you could imagine the look from the big angry truck driver looking at me in traffic when i was singing & dancing to Beyonce’s – Single ladies!
Travelling always comes with it challenges, it throws problems at you all the time, but when I look back at those special moments, I feel lucky.
After having that long stressful trip, it was nice to have a meal plan all ready to go, so that our dinner was already sorted and i didn’t have to worry about that, and that’s good too!
Take care and have fun!

PS . do you have any traveling trip’s that looks like hell but you seem to enjoy it instead?
